Art

Our purpose in teaching Art at Heart of England School is to enrich the experience of students by offering the opportunity to experience a wide variety of artistic skills and techniques including: digital imaging, drawing, ceramics, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture. A wide range of materials are used to create exciting outcomes at all key stages and our students are encouraged to engage in thorough preparation and research for all projects. Students make reference to a variety of contemporary and historical sources and deal with a range of current issues in individual and group work.

Years 7 to 11

In Years 7 and 8 the timetable allocation is 2 periods per cycle and in Year 8, 3 periods per cycle. In Years 10 and 11, GCSE Art and Photography are popular choices. The GCSE course is assessed on the basis of a portfolio of coursework carrying 60% of the final mark and a terminal examination worth 40%.

Sixth Form

artwork imageIn the Sixth Form students follow the AQA, AS and A2 level courses. Four units will be completed over the two years (2 in each), in which students will work on a variety of themes, some based on gallery and museum visits. We encourage our students to explore and experiment with a range of materials and to develop creative and personal responses. The work produced is displayed in an exhibition at the end of the course.

After they leave us, many of our students undertake Art Foundation and degree courses before going on to work in, architecture, fashion and textiles, graphic design, interior design and photography to name but a few artistic career paths.
