Drama

Drama is a vital part of every students’ development at Heart of England School. In Years 7 and 8 students explore a thorough grounding in drama disciplines, including educational drama techniques, performing arts skills, theatre history and texts, as well as gaining strong personal and group insights into their own lives through the very nature of the topics covered. In Year 9 this process is accelerated to give students a thorough preparation for GCSE. This programme is designed to help develop imagination, presentation skills, cultural awareness, empathy and familiarity with improvisation and responding to a stimulus.

The GCSE Drama Course in Years 10 and 11 offer in-depth study of text, theatre techniques and group performance. A programme of written and practical coursework, combined with a final written paper, ensures that students face a wide range of drama experiences.

The AS and A2 courses in Performing Studies has proved an enormous success, with excellent results and student progression to further studies and work opportunities. The course combines theatre experience with music and dance modules. Assessment is through coursework, written examinations and performance projects. As demand increases we are exploring other syllabus options at A-level.

All Drama courses at the school are supported by the provision of a dedicated drama studio with lighting and sound equipment. Opportunities exist to specialise in make-up and costume work. Students are encouraged to develop coursework for small-scale studio productions, as well as taking advantage of all the public performance op6tions available throughout the year at school.
