English

English is a key subject on any school timetable and the Heart of England School is particularly fortunate in having an experienced and highly qualified department to develop the skills and enrich the imaginative experience of all students.

Housed in a cluster of six principal teaching rooms in the main school building, including a newly refurbished Learning Resource Centre, the department links together language and literature studies in courses designed to instil a love of reading and an ability to communicate ideas, facts and feelings in written and spoken English. Detailed programmes of study ensure that the requirements of the National Literacy Strategy and National Curriculum are met in a structured, logical manner.

In all year groups, students benefit from being taught in mixed ability groups. In years 10 and 11 all students study for the AQA GCSE English and English Literature examinations, the vast majority going on to be entered for both subjects. Results in recent years have been outstanding.

AS/A2 level English Literature is a popular choice in the Sixth Form and is often combined with Drama and Theatre Studies, Business Studies, Geography, History, Modern Languages or Law by those wishing to enter BA degree courses after leaving school. The department also offers an AS in English Language.Photo of the spines and covers of English books on a shelf.
