Physical Education

The aim of the Physical Education Department is to enable all students to participate in a wide and varied range of sports and activities to the best of their ability. We aim to provide a firm basis which will encourage students to continue with physical activity both in and out of school.

In Years 7, 8 and 9 students follow a programme which includes athletics, dance, gymnastics and games. They also participate in a fitness module involving running, circuit training and aerobics.

In Years 10 and 11 students are able to specialise in activities of their choice (from a minimum of two activity areas). They also follow programmes of work on anatomy and physiology, fitness, indoor sport and recreation as well as team building exercises. Students will also be able to select Physical Education as a GCSE subject. The Department also offers Physical Education AS and A2 level in the Sixth Form which has become both popular and successful.

The school is proud of its fine sporting tradition established over many years by the outstanding achievements of our teams in local and national competitions. The Department is committed to providing the students with a wide range of extra-curricular activities and maintains good working relationships with local clubs and teams. We continue to have high expectations of all our students and hope to provide them with experiences which will equip them with knowledge, understanding and involvement which will last beyond their school years.

The Department was re-awarded the National Sportsmark Award this year in continued recognition of the range of sporting provision and excellence both in and out of school.
